Detroit Nutritional Policy (Update 2007-2008)

Attention: Parents and Guardians

More than 35 percent of Texas children are considered overweight or obese, which is significantly higher than the nation as a whole. Our schools are in a powerful position to influence children, which is why we created the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy.

These nutrition guidelines are a result of a collaborative effort among parents, school administrators, health professionals and members of the food industry. It's purpose? To promote a Healthier environment in Texas schools and help ensure a healthier future for Texas children.

To comply with this policy, effective for the 2007 / 2008 school year, the following will apply:

FMNVs and ALL FORMS OF CANDY: Will not be allowed to be provided to students any time anywhere on the school premises by anyone (including guest speakers) until after the end of the last scheduled class. (FMNVs include any carbonated beverage). We will not have Gatorade or sports drinks available for purchase at any time during the school day.

VENDING MACHINES There will be no vending / snack machines available at the elementary or middle school campuses.

Please note:

MICROWAVE OVEN USE: Please limit items sent with your child that require heating in a microwave oven. We cannot allow elementary school children to operate the microwave unattended. A cafeteria aid must be present to assist with use of the oven. This takes away from their ability to assist and observe all / other students. If you must send something that requires heating, it must be limited to two (2) minutes or less of heating time.

We appreciate your help with meeting the new nutrition requirements for 2007 / 2008. We look forward to a successful and rewarding school year at Detroit Elementary.
